Join us for our first round of knife making classes at The Barefoot Forge! Our guest instructor Andy Alm of Andy Alm Custom Knives will bring his 17 years of bladesmithing experience and forged in fire fame to share the process of building an iconic Railroad Spike Knife. This 4 hour Course takes place at our teaching facility in the North Hills of Pittsburgh, includes all consumables and materials, and each student will leave with a blade they’ve forged, shaped, and beveled, a lesson in sharpening and heat treating, and a greater understanding of what it takes to make a blade in four hours.

PREREQUISITE: OUR Beginner Blacksmithing- Railroad Spike Bottle Opener class.

We do not believe that bladesmithing is something you should jump right into, much like learning to play the piano- you’ve got to start with the chords! For this reason, this class requires OUR Intro To Blacksmithing- Bottle Openers course, where we discuss in depth the tools, shop layout, and safety necessary to get started in the hobby of blacksmithing, as well as some fundamental skill development and hands on experience. By requiring this prerequisite, we’re able to jump right into the intricacies of bladesmithing without having to cover all the background info.

For the time being, this course is offered exclusively on weekday evenings. If you’d like to book a private class for your group of up to 4 people, please reach out to schedule something outside of the public schedule.

Sign up here to confirm your spot for our upcoming classes! Classes will take place at our production shop at 2984 Harts Run Rd Allison Park PA 15101. All classes will have 4 students, and will last for 4 hours.
Specific instructions will be emailed to you once your place is secured, usually about 2 days before your course.

This time of year- it tends to be pretty hot. There’s not a logical way to avoid that, there’s no air conditioning and you’re standing around a furnace, forging is a GREAT winter activity. lol
Don’t worry, we’ll still have fun!
WE WILL BE CLOSED FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST. AS A RESULT, MOST OF THE JUNE AND JULY TIMES GET BOOKED UP WITH PRIVATE CLASSES. THERE ARE POTENTIALLY NO PUBLIC CLASSES IN THESE MONTHS. EACH MONTH’S SCHEDULE COMES OUT IN THE THIRD WEEK OF THE PRIOR MONTH.

Because there is so much interest in these classes, reserving your spot cannot be refunded unless the class is canceled. Reach out to us, and we’ll try to sell your spot on your behalf. The earlier you get in touch with us, the better the chances we’ll find a home for your reserved spot.
Due to insurance limitations, We offer no classes to anyone under the age of 18 and have no opportunities for Minors. Sorry!
