Your Ring Is special, We think so too.

Getting your Ring Size with Confidence!

Figuring out your ring size is never an easy task, but it’s a very important one. Throughout the course of your life, your ring size is likely to change- but did you know that it will also change throughout the course of your day, and throughout the course of your week?
Did you know that width helps to dictate your size?

Let’s jump in!
With modern rings, including ours, being limited in their resizability- we want to make sure we build you a ring that fits you comfortably for every hour of your day, every day of your week, and for as many years as is possible. There are three ways you can figure out your ring size- and one of those three… we hate.

First- go to a jeweler! They hate the idea that you’re there and not buying anything, but yet they’re the ones arguing they need a physical store front and can’t move entirely online. As long as this infrastructure is here…. use it.
Tell them you’re interested in some damascus rings- let’s see what they pull out. You ARE interested in some damascus rings, and when you see the CNC machined overseas, low contrast rings they have to offer with the low layer count predictable “Twist” pattern (They’ll ALL have “Twist”, as it’s the only way they can make repeatable patterns- something we take great pride in avoiding) you’ll see why you’ve made the right choice. Feel free to ask them how they craft them in house, where the materials come from, or how they hand make each one. Since all the jewelers order from the same catalog and import all their rings from the same over seas factories- i’m curious to see how customizable they offer the patterns in their rings.
What is important during this interaction is that you get sized based on a “Flat band- Not “Comfort Fit”” and figure out the width you’re looking for while looking at sizes. Because you really do want to see the damascus steel offerings out there- go to a second jeweler, on a different day, and see what they have to offer as well as their thoughts on sizing. If these two numbers are different, try a third. If all their rings are identical to the first shop….. by all means, feel free to go with the better deal between the two. I’m sending you directly to my competition and asking you to compare their products and pricing- i’m confident and excited to make your ring!

Second- Figure it out yourself! We have found that THIS PARTICULAR 6mm wide, flat internal profile ring sizer off amazon is a pretty great analog to the rings we make. The model changes from time to time, the link changes from time to time, the price changes from time to time- but find “This” ring sizer set:

NOW WHAT!?
Well, cut it up!
Get the various sizer rings off the carrier and start trying them on. Once you narrow it down to 2 or 3 that feel pretty good (More on that later)- wear them around throughout the day for a week. Once you narrow it down to the one you’re most confident in- wear it consistently for at least 24 hours, through all conditions of your life. Sleep in it, shower in it, lay bricks in it, use it in your never ending battle against the fruit flys in the kitchen, tap on the side of a glass to some live music with it, etc .
Keep in mind, these are in half sizes… and we offer quarter sizes- so if you believe you’re in between two…. you probably are!
Now we’ve got it figured out.
It should be loose in the morning and air conditioning, because it’ll be tight in the evening after a day of lumberjacking and aircraft restoration in the hot sun. If it’s comfortable in the summer- it’ll fall off in the winter. It should take a twist to get it over the knuckle, and there’s countless videos on YouTube that can help guide you into finding the size that’s “Correct”.
When it comes to our rings we can size them “up” a quarter size relatively easily, we can sometimes size them up half a size, going “Down” in size is tricky- so please get it right. Wider rings fit tighter (and worse overall), so keep that in mind. If you’re a size 8 on these 6mm wide ring sizers- the 11mm wide ring you order absolutely won’t fit, and I don’t have a great way of estimating your true size remotely on a ring that wide.
Most of what we make is 6-8mm wide and in general we go with “6mm will be more comfortable then 8mm, but will show less pattern”, 8mm wide rings make the most sense for larger sizes, 10 or so and beyond (or those with long thin fingers).

Third- Come to our shop (by appointment) and let’s have this discussion and sizing in person. Especially if you’re coming to make a ring, we start the day by writing down the size and width you plan to make. I’ve got enough responsibilities throughout that day helping you make a ring to the size you tell me without getting injured or breaking the shop- i’d prefer to eliminate the variable of telling you what that size “IS” as well.
If you’ve got no idea what your size is, come on out, before that day, and we’ll figure it out together. We will try on some inventory rings in addition to the sizer shown above.
